This compelling account of one person's dealings with the UKBA makes it clear what the human cost of its indifferent-to-incompetent service can be....

My Mother’s passing touched a nerve. It has left me broken and have scared me for life. I did not get to see my Mother. The affects of what happened to me cannot be fully fathomed. There is no closure for me. Will there be one?

Odette Sefuko stays in the UK – for now.

A last minute reprieve has been granted to a Sheffield asylum seeker who campaigners say has been the victim of torture and rape by the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), as reported in the Guardian Northerner on Thursday.

Odette Sefuko was due to be deported to Uganda on the evening of Monday 4 March but the Home Office suspended removal after an application for judicial review claim was made in the High Court earlier in the day.

Supporters say Sefuko was on the bus to Heathrow when the official order for deferred removal came through. She was then returned to Yarl's Wood detention centre where she has been held since her arrest on Wednesday 13 February.

Simon Jenkins: Despite the strain, London thrives on its immigrant mix.

http://www.standard.co.uk/comment/comment/simon-jenkins-despite-the-strain-london-thrives-on-its-immigrant-mix-8521084.html

Immigration control is like spooning the sea. The best boundary that can be thrown up is a mild deterrent. But every doorstep politician knows that the real frontier is not at a border but in the poorer parts of cities. Newcomers will come. When they stop coming, as Moscow has found to its cost, is when a city starts to panic.

Theresa May has sparked a row with the Treasury and Foreign Office by attempting to impose tougher visa rules on Brazilian migrants.

Chancellor George Osborne and Foreign Secretary William Hague are both understood to be opposing her plans to clamp down on illegal immigration from one of the world’s fastest-growing economic powerhouses. The issue was due to be discussed this afternoon at the National Security Council, chaired by the Prime Minister.
